Organic soil microplots treated with CuSO4. 5H2O in 1978 to vary in Cu concentrations from 23 to 1344 μg g-1 soil (ppm) at site A (a peat) and from 135 to 1745 ppm at site B (a muck) were, in 1981, banded with fonofos (O-ethyl S-phenyl ethyl phosphonodithioate) at a rate of 100 mg of Dyfonate 10G (fonofos) per 20 cm of row, and seeded with onions. Analysis of the soils during the growing season showed that persistence of the pesticide was not affected by levels of Cu in the organic soils. Further, size of the microbial population (determined by plate counts) in the vicinity of the pesticide band in the root zone was not influenced, by the variation in soil copper concentrations. Consequently, the Cu had no direct or indirect effect on the persistence of fonofos in the soils.
