The adsorption of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), listed as one of the hazardous air pollutants or air toxics, on the two commercial granular adsorbents, i.e., activated carbon PCB (coconut shell) and hydrophobic zeolite DAY, was studied. The laboratory investigation was conducted at various temperatures of 293, 303 and 313 K. The physical properties and characterization of the two adsorbents were also measured and compared with each other. The experimental results indicate that the adsorption capacity of activated carbon PCB is significantly higher than that of zeolite DAY. It was found that the measured adsorption data can be reasonably well fitted by the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm equations. The values of the parameters of the adsorption equations were thus obtained for the two adsorbents. The adsorption capacity of DMF vapor on the two adsorbents examined in this study appears to be mainly determined by the physical properties of adsorbents (e.g. BET surface area and micropore volume), which are consistent with the isotherm parameters obtained from the experimental results.
