Contents: Treatment of desizing wastewater, a typical high strength industrial wastewater, by wet air oxidation (WAO) is investigated. The desizing wastewater sample was obtained from a large textile dyeing and finishing plant. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of the initial pH of wastewater, operating pressure, gas flow rate and temperature on the pollutant (chemical oxygen demand or COD) removal. Both air and pure oxygen were tested to determine their respective effect on the COD removal. It was found that over 60% COD removal efficiency can be easily realized in an hour of WAO treatment of the wastewater. Also observed in the present investigation was that the WAO process was able to considerably elevate the biodegradibility of the treated desizing wastewater and thus rendering it suitable for subsequent activated sludge treatment.
