A four-month bench-scale study was undertaken to assess the capability of the Virginia Initiative Plant (VIP) process for removing nitrogen and phosphorus from domestic wastewater. The VIP configuration consists of an anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment sequence for accomplishing organic carbon removal, nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal. Average effluent total nitrogen (TN) concentrations ranged from 5.1 to 23.4 mg/L as N, whereas average effluent soluble total phosphorus concentrations ranged from 4.7 to 6.5 mg/L as P. Observed specific nitrification rates (SNRs) ranged from 0.006 to 0.08 mg N/mg MLVSS-day whereas observed specific denitrification rates ranged from 0.003 to 0.18 mg N/mg MLVSS-day. |
