Ammonia complexation in the analysis of hexavalent chromium in fly ash

Titel: Ammonia complexation in the analysis of hexavalent chromium in fly ash

Jaar: 1995-07
Inhoud: Municipal waste incinerator fly ash was analyzed employing ion chromatography with post column derivatization. The aim of this work was to investigate digestion media to determine appropriate sample analysis conditions for Cr(VI) analysis of fly ash. The effect of digestion media and conditions were evaluated with respect to Cr(VI) spike recovery and Cr(III) oxidation. Evidence is presented demonstrating that oxidation of Cr(III) in alkaline media is reduced by 65 to 95 % upon the addition of ammonia. This is attributed to complexation of ammonia and Cr(III). It is also demonstrated that ammonia enhances spike recovery of Cr(VI) fortified fly ash by 10 to 20 %. The mechanism for the improvement in Cr(VI) analysis by ammonia is a result of interfacial and associative interactions. Data is presented that specifically establishes an associative interaction between ammonia and Cr(VI). Recommendations are made for improvement of existing Cr(VI) analysis procedures and collection systems.
