Year: 1995-02
Contents: The impact of Firle Sewage Works effluent on the quality of the receiving Mukuvisi river waters was studied by monitoring selected chemical, physical and microbiological parameters in the period May to August 1992. Samples were collected upstream and downstream from the sewage effluent discharge point. The effluent was also monitored. The parameters monitored were the commonly used water quality indicators (temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved solids, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, PO43-, K+, Ca2+ and fecal coliforms), and selected toxic heavy metals (Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn). The levels of virtually all the water quality indicators went up after the sewage discharge point with the exception of temperature, pH, biological oxygen demand and suspended solids. There was no significant change in the levels of the toxic heavy metals.
