Two hundred and forty water samples were collected from the river Tigris and tested bacteriologically from the end of 1986 to the end of 1987. The mean of total aerobic bacteria was 9.7 x 103 ml while the means of total coliforms, faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci were 10.5 x 103/100 ml, 4.8 x 102/100 ml and 1.4 x 102/100 ml respectively. The counts of all types of bacteria were higher in the Winter and Spring months than those in Autumn and Summer months. Station 2 observed a high level of resistance to different antibiotics. |
