Separation of seven different amine and nitro aromatic compounds were achieved on three different octadecylsilane (C18) phase columns. The three C18 stationary phases involved in the investigation were: Lichrosorb, Microspher and Supelcosil. Both buffered and non-buffered separations have been investigated isocratically. Basically, the same order of separation was obtained under the non-buffered condition on all three columns with some changes in peak shape and resolution depending on the nature of the column packing. However, under buffered conditions, 3-nitro benzoic acid interacted differently towards the Supelcosil column. It is more retained by this octadecyl stationary phase, resulting in large tailing and a longer retention time, thus disrupting the order of separation. |
