Major, minor and trace quantities of ten stable elements have been determined from the aquatic sediments of the Kubanni River Dam (KRD), at Zaria, Nigeria. Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) was used in determining Na, Al, K, Ti, V, Mn, Ba, Sm, Dy and U in the sediment. Four of these elements (Al, Ti, V, Mn) were identified in all the cores with a strong correlation of Al with Ti. Levels of Al, Ti, V, Mn, are intimate indicators that the weathered depositions in the sediments have granitic provenance. Our data for these stable elments will serve as reference levels for assessing further depositions in the aquatic environment as well as baseline information for the proposed continuous monitoring of the area by the research Centre.
