It was hypothesized that the antineoplastic drug (1, 3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-i-nitrosourea (BCNU), a known and potent Inhibitor of erythrocyte glutathlone reductase (GSSG-R), may enhance the oxidant stress of known oxidizing agents commonly found in the environment. Consequently, this paper assessed the effects of BCNU-induced decreases (i.e. down to approximately 20% of normal) In human erythrocyte GSSG-R on the toxicity of six known oxldant stressor agents (i.e. chlorite, copper, nitrite, p-chloroaniline, paraquat and carbaryl) as measured by changes in methemoglobin (METHB) and reduced glutathlone (GSH). The results Indicated that a BCNU-induced deficiency of GSSG-R produced no enhanced formation of METHB or decrease in GSH under exposure to the above stressors.
