Inhoud: TVA is developing a process for the production of a high-grade ammonium polyphosphate (APP) suspension fertilizer from merchant-grade wet-process phosphoric acid and anhydrous ammonia. The acid is ammoniated in an “enlarged” pipe reactor; the molten APP is dissolved in water and the fluid is cooled to room temperature by evaporative cooling. Attapulgite clay is in the APP fluid to prevent solids from settling during shipment, storage, and use. The process is energy efficient in that hot APP fluid provides all the heat required to preheat the phosphoric acid and vaporize the ammonia. Suspension grade of up to 12-36-0 can be made with 20 to 25% of the P2O5 present as polyphosphate. Lower shipping costs due to the high nutrient content of the suspensions makes it a desirable product. The APP fluid fertilizer can be either applied directly to the soil or used in preparation of mixed suspension products of various ratios.
