Human erythrocyte Superoxide dismutase activity was reduced to 67%, 50% and 41% of normal via the action of diethyldithiocarbamate (DOC). Blood samples from five human subjects were incubated with DDC and 3 mM chlorite or chlorite alone. Erythrocytes incubated with DDC and chlorite had significantly increased methemoglobin levels (p = .001), compared to erythrocytes incubated with chlorite alone. A linear regression analysis indicated a significant linear increase in methemoglobin levels (p = .001) for erythrocytes with low SOD activity, incubated with 3 mM chlorite. |
