A study was carried out using human kidney samples to elucidate any significant connection between the concentration of cadmium in the kidney cortex and the cardiovascular diseases. The samples were wet-digested using 1:1 analytical grade nitric acid, and analyzed for cadmium using a Perkin Elmer flame atomic absorption spectronphometer model 403. The results obtained did not show any significant correlation between cadmium concentration in the kidney cortex and cardiovascular diseases. However, the mean concentration of the metal in the renal cortex for those cases with high possibility of having some form of cardiovascular diseases were consistently higher than these with low possibility of having cardiovascular diseases. This suggests that cadmium may play a contributory role in cardiovascular diseases under some conditions which need further investigation. |
