Contents: Nitrification studies in bubble aerated packed bed reactor have established two salient features of such systems. Firstly, it incorporates all the advantages of attached growth process as the biomass is attached to the surface of the packing. Secondly, it acts as a continuous flow stirred tank reactor with bulk liquid phase having uniform composition. Therefore, in case of any shock dosage of toxicants to such systems, the well mixed liquid phase should provide the reactor with dilute toxicant concentration compared to that in the influent, which should reduce the inhibitory effects significantly.
