Inhoud: A study of azo and nitro dyes as candidates for nomination to the NCI Chemical Selection Working Group (CSWG) for carcinogenesis bioassay is described. The preliminary candidate list of 383 dyes was provided by the Dyes Environmental and Toxicology Organization, Inc. (DETO)/(United States Operating Committee (USOC) of the Ecological and Toxicological Association of the Dyestuffs Manufacturing Industry (ETAD). After the identification and elimination of the chemicals considered previously by the CSWG, already tested adequately, or on test currently, the Information on the remaining candidates pertaining to chemical structure, potential exposure, and suspicion of carcinogenicity was evaluated. On the basis of these considerations, 37 chemicals were initially judged to be the best candidates for carcinogenesis bioassay. Further prioritization of these candidates resulted in a list of 14 final candidates.
