Cultures of the Japanese red tide organism Chattonella subsalsa were treated with aponin, the material that is extracted from cultures of Gomphosphaeria aponina. Aponin is cytolytic toward the Florida red tide organism, Ptychodiscus brevis, but it was less cytolytic toward C. subsalsa, based upon analysis of cells surviving after a 24-hour period. The implications of this preliminary study are considered. |
