Inhoud: SUMMARY The approach adopted by current dimensional tolerance analysis has many limitations. One obvious weakness is its handling of three-dimensional assemblies. The objective of this paper is to address this area and look into the possibility of integrating a new approach in dealing with such a problem. Tolerances in assemblies are determined by the tolerances of each component assembled together. This would require a complete explicit representation of the assembly information. The system requires relatively simple input data, part dimensions with their tolerances and mating conditions. This reduces the need for manual specification of the assembly configuration through automatic design and analysis. For under-constrained assemblies, the remaining degrees of freedom are automatically coalesced into a set of kinematic joints that automatically capture the functionality of the assembly. For over-constrained situations, redundant constraints are identified and checked for consistency, allowing multiple feature relationships between two parts to be solved easily. A concept for the initial stage of the development principle is outlined in this paper with its implementation in computer-aided design that is also useful for computer-aided project planning, computer-aided manufacturing, robotic assembly, bill of material and computer-integrated manufacturing.
