Shaft Design Revisited: A More Rational Approach

Title: Shaft Design Revisited: A More Rational Approach
Author: Frost, R. B.
Appeared in: Journal of engineering design
Paging: Volume 4 (1993) nr. 4 pages 331-352
Year: 1993
Contents: Traditional writings on shaft design have typically been characterized by a significant lack of recognition of the real conditions of service and of the corresponding appropriate design criteria. Specifically, the high incidence of shafts which are designed for stiffness is not acknowledged and methods of achieving high stiffness are not well described. The fundamental problem of fatigue design in the presence of fluctuating principal stress directions, and the four common cases of design for strength are also not treated. This paper addresses these issues and presents a cohesive, yet flexible design methodology.
