Alternative theories of wages in less developed countries: An empirical test

Titel: Alternative theories of wages in less developed countries: An empirical test
Auteur: Heady, Christopher
Verschenen in: The journal of development studies
Paginering: Jaargang 24 (1987) nr. 1 pagina's 5-15
Jaar: 1987-10
Inhoud: This article develops a methodology for distinguishing empirically between different theories of industrial wage determination in less developed countries. This problem is particularly interesting as the theories are usually set up in terms of variables that are not directly observable. Thus the theories had to be re-cast in a form that yielded predictions about observable variables, and the differences in the predictions had to be identified in order to yield a test. The theories are divided into two groups: 'cost-minimising' theories and a 'profit-sharing' theory. The methodology is applied to data from Colombia and it is found that both sets of theories are in operation, but that profit-sharing was observed on an appreciable scale in more industries.
