Labor market discrimination in a poor urban economy

Title: Labor market discrimination in a poor urban economy
Author: Knight, J. B.
Sabot, R. H.
Appeared in: The journal of development studies
Paging: Volume 19 (1982) nr. 1 pages 67-87
Year: 1982-10
Contents: Labor market discrimination by sex and by race in a poor urban economy is analyzed using a survey of manufacturing employees in Tanzania. There are large differences in mean wages by both sex and race. Using techniques previously applied to developed countries, it is found that, whereas the sex difference in mean wages can be explained mainly in terms of sex differences in personal characteristics, the race difference is mainly the result of wage and job discrimination. An attempt is made to explain the results, which run counter to common presuppositions about discrimination.
