Economic integration and export instability in central America: A portfolio model

Title: Economic integration and export instability in central America: A portfolio model
Author: Caceres, Luis Rene
Appeared in: The journal of development studies
Paging: Volume 15 (1979) nr. 3 pages 141-153
Year: 1979-04
Contents: After a review of the literature on export instability in the less developed countries, this paper investigates the effect that economic integration has had on the stability of the Central American countries' export sectors. A portfolio model is formulated to determine whether the Central American inter-regional trade ssows are capable of exerting stabilising forces on the countries' export sectors. The experience of the first decade of Central American economic integration shows that for Nicaragua and Costa Rica interregional trade has smoothed the fluctuations originating in their traditional exports.
