Constructivist and constructionist approaches to psychology and psychotherapy are applied in examining what it means to function creatively as a psychotherapist. Four constructivist metaphors for psychotherapy-therapy as personal science, selfhood development, narrative reconstruction, and conversational elaboration-are briefly discussed in reference to therapist creativity. Relevant case examples in which these metaphors for therapy-enhanced practitioner creativity are provided. It is argued that current movement toward psychotherapy manualization runs counter to a constructivist emphasis on the centrality of therapist creativity. |
