American Lebensraum is how State Department geographer Isaiah Bowman described the Roosevelt administration's ambitions for a US-led global settlement after the Second World War. This paper argues that we can identify three moments of US global ambition: the first peaks in 1919, the second in 1945, and the third we are living through today. When seen in historical and geographical context, the US-led wars against Afghanistan and Iraq after 2001 need to be viewed not as wars on terrorism, nor indeed as wars simply about oil, but rather as wars designed to complete the work of that strain of globalization that has characterized the third moment of US ambition since the 1980s. As with the previous efforts at a US-centered globalism, this one will fail, but in all likelihood at considerable cost in terms of human life. |
