Starting small and with uncertainty: toward a neurocomputational account of knowing and learning in school science laboratories

Title: Starting small and with uncertainty: toward a neurocomputational account of knowing and learning in school science laboratories
Author: Roth, Wolff-Michael
Appeared in: International journal of science education
Paging: Volume 20 (1988) nr. 9 pages 1089-1105
Year: 1988-11
Contents: In this article, a neurocomputational account of knowing and learning is provided. This framework grounds situated cognition theory in a neurocomputational model of neuronal activity. The advantages of this theoretical approach are that it provides (a) a link between physical activity during 'hands-on' experiences and conceptual understanding and (b) a plausible and fruitful account for empirical data on the changes in students' ontologies and the uncertainty from which these arise. Case material from a study of learning in the domain of simple machines is provided to illustrate these issues.
