Inhoud: Polarization signatures derived from the four Stokes parameters were compared for the sky and a soybean canopy. For an azimuth of 80° measured from the Sun, the signature for the sky under Rayleigh conditions was found to mimic closely that found in the principal plane of the canopy (Fresnel reflection). However, for azimuths of 90° and 270° the canopy polarization was distinct from those of the sky for all azimuths. Its response in those instances was essentially that which would be found by reflecting the sky polarization signatures across a plane passing through a phase angle of about 90° and parallel to the polarization axis. The fourth Stokes parameter for the soybean canopy obtained in the principal plane on a clear day showed classical behaviour according to electromagnetic theory. It exhibited a change in handedness in the vicinity of Brewster's angle. This behaviour was not observed out of the principal plane. A comparison of sky polarization signatures with aerosol optical densities showed that only the third Stokes parameter was unambiguously affected.
