Contents: The Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (RESTEC) is a nonprofit-making, private foundation working in conjunction with the Science and Technology Agency and the National Space Development Agency of Japan. It strives to promote environmental protection, social economy and national welfare through the development and dissemination of remote sensing technology for the monitoring of global resources and environmental phenomena. This paper describes RESTEC's organization, equipment and major activities. It details RESTEC's achievements in research and development of remote sensing technology and equipment, its activities in the distribution of remote sensing data and the kind of training courses offered by RESTEC in Japan and elsewhere. The author discusses current user and product trends in Japan, but concludes that commercialization of remote sensing technology in Japan is yet to come.
