We review a number of historical controversies over style, in particular the Attic-Asiatic debates of the first century B.C.E. Our story begins with the British Royal Society and Gulliver ' s Travels , continues back to Greece and Rome over two thousand years ago, and has as its chief characters the Sophists, Plato, and Cicero, and later Thomas Sprat. We trace from ancient times to the present the evolution and periodic manifestations of issues that frequently attend stylistic debates. We then attempt to bring this historical awareness to bear on current debates regarding the appropriateness of the APA style for narrative and other qualitative inquiries. We examine the epistemological implications of APA style, reminding our readers that stylistic choices are always implicated in the decisions we make about how to know and understand our world. We call for qualitative researchers to develop their own style guidelines- ones more fitting to qualitative assumptions about knowledge, ones more reflective of the actual practices of qualitative researchers.
