The author was a participant in the Border Studies Program in the fall semester of 2000. She conducted her field study at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights in El Paso, Texas. This ethnography explores the racism that underpins the militarization of the Mexico-U.S. border by juxtaposing the ease of the author's border-crossing experiences with the dilemma encountered by one of the legal clients she was serving, Ivan Santos. Contrasting her experiences with those of Ivan Santos, the author undertakes an examination of the culture of ''whiteness.'' |
