This paper explains how General Systems Theory (GST)(1) can help managers. GST is more than a metaphor of complexity and interconnectedness. It is a specific scientific philosophy with extensions, such as cybernetics, that offer precise, and often counterintuitive, prescriptions for managing complex entities. The paper uses one company history to differentiate GST/cybernetic interpretation from traditional theory and to show why managers may find the GST interpretation useful. |
