The IUPS Congress as a Subsystem of International Communication Among Psychologists

Titel: The IUPS Congress as a Subsystem of International Communication Among Psychologists
Auteur: Russell, Roger W.
Verschenen in: International journal of psychology
Paginering: Jaargang 6 (1971) nr. 3 pagina's 239-244
Jaar: 1971
Inhoud: In the preface to his text, Language and communication (1951), George A. Miller calls attention to the view that “communication, if it is anything at all, is a social event. The spread of information through a group of people is one of the most important social events that can occur”. Communication is not only important, but vital to the development of the systematic body of knowledge which characterized such a discipline as psychology. Without this kind of social inter- action, the results of individual effort to understand the behavior of living organisms would remain private information of no use to others than the individual himself. Communication among psychologists makes such information public and, by so bringing it to light, provides opportunities for its verification by others, for its assimilation into the existing body of knowledge called “psychology”, for extending its implications by further investigation and for putting it to work toward some practical end.
