We examined the value correlates of different social identities among two groups of South Africans, those identifying themselves as white Afrikaners or as black South Africans. Respondents indicated the importance of their membership of different groups and also completed indices of National strength and order, and International harmony and equality. Multiple regression analyses showed that the social identities associated with both values for self-identified Afrikaners were mainly linked with ethnic language (Afrikaans) and religion. Among self-identified black South Africans, however, the social identities were more encompassing, including the notion of global citizen and South African. The findings are discussed in the light of ongoing political and social change in South Africa and the nature of changing identities, as well as the role of cultural symbols in facilitating in-group identification among white Afrikaners. Cette etude examine les correlations entre les valeurs de deux identites sociales differentes chez deux groupes de sud-africains, qui s'identifient eux-memes comme afrikaners blancs ou sud-africains noirs. Les participants indiquent l'importance de leur appartenance aux differents groupes et completent aussi des reponses sur l'identite et l'ordre national ainsi que sur l'harmonie et l'egalite internationales. Des analyses de regression multiple montrent que les identites sociales associees aux deux valeurs sont, chez les personnes qui se considerent afrikaners, liees au langage ethnique (afrikaans) et a la religion. Chez les personnes qui s'identifient comme sud-africains noirs, cependant, les identites sociales sont plus englobantes et comprennent aussi la notion de citoyen global et de sud-africain. Ces resultats sont discutes a la lumiere des changements politiques et sociaux en cours en Afrique du Sud, de la nature changeante des identites et du role des symboles culturels dans la facilitation de l'identification a un groupe chez les afrikaners blancs. |
