The paper addresses the cultural bias in the conceptualization and assessment of the self construct inherent in self-discrepancy theory proposed by Higgins. It argues that discrepancies between actual and undesired selves conceived in terms of salient identity should be better predictors of depressive experiences among Chinese early adolescents than the popular notion of actual:ideal discrepancies conceived in terms of individuated self. Eighty-four Chinese early adolescents drawn from the normal population in Hong Kong participated in the study, adopting a short-term two-wave prospective design. Empirical support was obtained showing that self-discrepancies conceived in terms of salient identity and discrepancies between actual and undesired selves were stronger predictors of depressive experiences over time. The findings were interpreted from the perspectives of Chinese culture and the development of self understanding. Cet article porte sur le biais culturel inherent a la conceptualisation et a l'evaluation du construit du soi propose par Higgins dans sa theorie de l'incompatibilite dusoi. Il soutient que les incompatibilites entre le soi reel et le soi indesirable concues en termes d'identite predominante constitueraient de meilleurs predicteurs de l'experience de depression des jeunes adolescents chinois que la notion plus populaire qui concoit les incompatibilites soi reel-soi ideal en termes de soi individualise. Quatre-vingt quatre jeunes adolescents chinois provenant de la population normale de Hong Kong participe a cette etude. Les resultats indiquent que les incompatibilites du soi concues en termes d'identite predominante et les incompatibilites entre le soi reel et le soi indesirable deviennent avec le temps de meilleurs predicteurs de l'experience de depression. Ils sont interpretes dans le context de la culture chinoise et du developpement de la comprehension de soi. |
