The present study compared the moderating effect of social support on parental stress variables and mental health among three groups of parents: parents of HBV (Hepatitis B Virus) children who attended the special health kindergarten, parents of HBV children who stayed at home, and parents of healthy children who attended the ordinary kindergarten. These families resided in the city of Guangzhou. A set of questionnaires measuring parental stress and social support were given to the mothers after a one-hour interview. Results showed that parents of HBV children were significantly more stressed and psychologically at risk than parents of healthy children. They also sought help from social resources more often than the parents of healthy children. Parents of healthy children who attended the ordinary kindergarten reported the highest levels of overall social support, i.e. the number of very close friends and relatives with whom they could form close emotional attachments. Although they reported a lower number of acquaintances available, they also reported the most satisfactory relationships with the support provided by their acquaintances, lower levels of stress, fewer somatic problems, more adequate general health, and more perceived meaning in life than did parents of HBV children, and social support is one of the main influences on stress or parental health. The findings call for further research to focus on parents' well-being and social support that is helpful in addressing the needs of the family. Cette etude compare l'effet moderateur du support social sur des variables de stress et la sante mentale des parents chez trois groupes de parents: des parents d'enfants ayant le virus de l'hepatite B (HBV) et qui frequentent une ecole maternelle speciale; des parents d'enfants HBV qui restent a la maison; des parents d'enfants en sante qui frequentent une ecole maternelle ordinaire. Ces familles habitent toutes la ville de Guangzhou. Une batterie de questionnaires mesurant le stress parental et le support social a ete administree aux meres apres une entrevue d'une heure. Les resultats indiquent que les parents d'enfants HBV sont significativement plus stresses et psychologiquement plus a risque que les parents d'enfants en sante . Ils recherchent aussi plus souvent de l'aide dans les ressources sociales que les parents d'enfants en sante . Les parents d'enfants en sante qui fre quentent une e cole maternelle ordinaire rapportent les niveaux le plus e leve s de support social global, c'est-a-dire le nombre d'amis intimes et de parents avec lesquels ils peuvent former des liens emotifs e troits. Bien qu'ils rapportent le nombre le plus petit de relations disponsibles, ils rapportent aussi la satisfaction la plus grande avec le support fourni par ces relations. Ils rapportent egalement les niveaux les plus faibles de stress et de proble mes somatiques, un meilleur e tat de sante ge ne ral et perc oivent un sens a la vie davantage que les parents ayant des enfants HBV. Cette etude met en evidence la ne cessite de recherches additionnelles centre es sur le bien-etre et montre que le support social donne aux parents aide a reponde aux besoins de la famille.
