Cette recherche vise a definir le role du milieu culturel dans la substitution d'un outil par un autre instrument dans trois taches techniques quotidiennes: decou-page, devissage, clouage. Trois categories de sujets (n = 180) d'age prescolaire (milieu: gitan, technicien, “favorise”) ont ete testees dans deux conditions experimentales de substitution: (1) les sujets ont a choisir un instrument adequat parmi les substituts (11 objets proposes) socialement marques par leur usage courant; (2) les sujets sont invites a remplacer l'outil manquant par un objet non investi de significations sociales particulieres. Les resultats montrent une supe riorite generale du milieu gitan dans les deux conditions experimentales; surtout dans la mesure ou le substitut propose ne se trouve pas investi par les valeurs culturelles propres au mode de vie du group social. The study expects to define the cultural component of substitution ability in three groups of subjects 4.5 to 5.5 years old (n = 180): gypsy, labour and privileged class categories, in three common technical work-tasks: cutting, unscrewing and nailing. The hypothesis is tested in two experimental conditions: in the first, we ask the subjects to choose the adequate tool among substitutes socially marked by their common use; in the second, subjects are invited to replace the missing tool by an object which is not identified by a special social significance. The findings indicate a general superiority of the gypsy group in both experimental conditions, especially when the substitute is not identified by a cultural value, relating to the social group's way of life.
