Psychology in Spain has a long tradition. In the 16th century, Luis Vives and Juan Huarte are considered by contemporary historians to be the pioneers of empirical approaches to psychology. Giner de 10s Rios, in his Brief Lectures on Psychology published in 1874, showed direct and indirect links with the work of Helmholtz, Fechner, and Wundt (Lafuente-Niiio, 1982). Their books pointed out concepts, approaches and ideas that included, in embryo, refined methods of analysis of human behaviour in siru. They favoured a setting where the emphasis was on predictions and on the empirical study of human psychology. Some topics are still discussed in many books of general, differential, and applied psychology (Carpintero, 1982; Fernandez-Zuiiiga & Garcia Tuiion, 1976).
