It is a privilege to be introducing this special issue of the International Journal of Psychology. The special issue grew directly from a symposium at the 22nd International Congress of Applied Psychology held in Kyoto, Japan, on July 25, 1990. All of the papers included here were presented at the symposium-albeit sometimes in earlier versions-and the discussion that is reproduced here is based on the verbal feedback given then by the discussant, Kaoru Kurosawa. The participants came from four different nations; most of us knew only a few of the others before we gathered in Kyoto. All of us were social psychologists who had some interest in cross- cultural issues. When we did meet and exchange ideas, some exciting common themes emerged.' It is the purpose of these papers to provide the reader with the details of these ideas, and the purpose of the discussion to offer commentary and critique on them. The job of this Introduction, as I see it, is to present in broad strokes an outline of what we all were doing, what similar threads run through the work, and what is exciting about the body of work as a whole.
