A question of recurrent interest is whether pure or basic research and applied research may be meaningfully differentiated. Discussion of the issue typically begins by considering definitions. Subsequently illustrations are provided showing how basic research has led to practical application and how applied research has led to the advancement of theory. These propositions granted, the discussion usually then turns to an analysis of similarities and differences, and finally the discussion ends, typically with minimal resolution. Although in this paper definitions are not considered, and illustrations are not provided which show how one form of research benefits the objectives of the other, the present analysis nevertheless follows the traditional basic vs. applied 'script'. However, in the present paper, basic and applied research are considered in terms of problem solving, and the question addressed is how basic and applied research vary with respect to the constraints that are placed upon the investigator in relation to the problem-solving process. Three examples are presenteed, one of basic research, one of applied, and one 'between', the constraints being examined in each case. The analysis of the three cases leads to the conclusion that basic and applied research are qualitatively different.
