Titel: When do People Act to Maintain Common Resources? A Reformulated Psychological Question for our Times
Auteur: Stern, Paul C.
Verschenen in: International journal of psychology
Paginering: Jaargang 13 (1978) nr. 2 pagina's 149-158
Jaar: 1978
Inhoud: George Boniecki, in his recent (1977) article, posed the question, “Is man interested in his future?” as a crucial topic for psychological research. Boniecki reasons that an answer to this question will help people to design a desirable future and to avoid the multiple crises of resources, food, population, and pollution which threaten human welfare and survival. While I share Boniecki's concern for our future and his conviction that psychological research can help humanity avoid disaster, I suggest that Boniecki's question is not the most useful one for the purpose of research. In this article, I attempt to reformulate the question and to summarize the answers which psychological research is beginning to provide. I also suggest some implications of the reformulated question for social and psychological research at the international level.
