Carabid beetles are considered to be important natural enemies in agroecosystems. Consequently, their ability to disperse at both the field and landscape scale is of interest to ecologists attempting to understand carabid population dynamics. Many carabids are amenable to mark-release-recapture methodology: they are often numerous and are sufficiently large to be marked with a unique identifier visible by eye. Pitfall trapping provides a suitable method of recapture, due to the insects' propensity for dispersal by walking (although the success of such studies is highly dependent on trapping effort). This paper reviews techniques available for the collection, marking and recapture of adult carabids in farmland ecosystems. |
