Control of bacterial blight of cowpea (Vigna unquiculata (l.) walp.)

Titel: Control of bacterial blight of cowpea (Vigna unquiculata (l.) walp.)
Auteur: Jindal, K. K.
Thind, B. S.
Verschenen in: International journal of pest management
Paginering: Jaargang 36 (1990) nr. 3 pagina's 211-213
Jaar: 1990
Inhoud: Five chemicals namely, Agrimycin-100 (600 μg/ml), Streptocycline (100 μg/ml), Bavistin (500 μg/ml), Blitox-50 W.P. (2000 μg/ml), Dithane M-45 (2000 μg/ml) and nine combinations of the last four chemicals were evaluated as foliar sprays during Monsoon 1982 for the control of bacterial blight of cowpea. All the treatments significantly controlled the disease but the two most effective treatments were: (i) three sprays of Streptocycline (100 μg/ml) + Bavistin (500 μg/ml) and (ii) two sprays of Streptocycline (100 μg/ml) + Bavistin (500 μg/ml) followed by third spray of Streptocycline (100 μg/ml) + Blitox-50 W.P. (2000 μg/ml). Four seed treatments, namely hot water (50 °C for 30 min), solar heat, Streptocycline (100 μg/ml) + Agallol (2000 μg/ml) and Streptocycline (100 μg/ml) + Captan (2000 μg/ml), the two most effective spraying schedules mentioned above and eight combinations of seed treatments and spraying schedules were evaluated during Monsoon 1983 and 1984. All the seed treatments significantly reduced the percentage of diseased seedlings and disease intensity on cotyledons. All the treatments, except solar heat and hot water treatments in 1983 at Gurdaspur and in 1984 at Ludhiana, significantly reduced the intensity of bacterial blight on true cowpea leaves. All the combinations provided significantly better disease control and also gave a higher grain yield in comparison to seed treatments or spraying schedules alone. Therefore, it is recommended that a seed treatment should always be accompanied by a spraying schedule for better disease control and yield.
