The use of fungal pathogens as biological control agents for weeds is provoking increasing interest worldwide. Some commercial products, already available in the USA, are described in this article as are other potential mycoherbicides. Particular attention is paid to Collego™, a formulation of a strain of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc, which is used successfully to control Aeschynomene virginica (L.) B.S.P., northern jointvetch or curly indigo, in rice and soyabeans in Arkansas, USA. Some consideration is given to the potential for using indigenous fungal pathogens as biological control agents in the tropics. |
