Several fungi can cause diseases of avocado (Persea americana (Mill.)) of which Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands is the most serious. Phytophthora root rot causes extensive losses of avocado trees in nearly every country where avocados are grown. The fungus can be isolated from soil and roots by using selective agar media containing antibiotic chemicals and by using various types of baits such as seedling plants or plant parts. Phytophthora cinnamomi has considerable saprophytic ability and has survived for up to six years in moist soils in the absence of a host. It occurs most rapidly and severely in soils with restricted drainage. Control measures include the use of resistant rootstocks and a breeding programme has been carried out in California, USA for over 25 years. High resistance has been found in several small-fruited species of Persea but these are not graft compatible with avocado. Both chemical and biological control measures have given promising results. Armillariella mellea (Vahl. ex Fr.) Quelet causes a severe rot of large roots and rootstocks but is not common. Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium albo-atrum Reinke & Berth, is a minor, vascular disease of avocado. Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn (Thanatephorus cucumeris (Frank) Donk) occasionally attacks avocado seeds and seedlings in nursery plantings and in seed beds. Scab, Sphaceloma perseae Jenkins, is a common disease but copper sprays are an effective control. Other diseases of avocado described are anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) Dothiorella rot (Dothiorella gregaria) sun-blotch and black streak. |
