Educating homeless students presents special challenges to public school educators. In this article I describe a qualitative research project that focuses on the impact homelessness has on children's schooling as well as suggest strategies that support these students and their families. First, the article reviews past research on this subject. This research points out the typical pattern of academic and behaviour problems these students exhibit as a result of their unstable and often deprived backgrounds. A brief description of a successful intervention programme for homeless students developed in South Carolina is given. My research includes interviews with a variety of people who serve homeless children and their families as well as a review of school records of homeless students who attended my school last year. The results of the study are analysed and suggestions for future research are made. |
