Understanding the implications of the cultural non-neutrality of computers for teacher decision making requires that the technology be framed in terms of the economic globalization process and the growing ecological crisis. The paper examines the ways in which computers represent the digital phase of the Industrial Revolution, contribute to the further centralization of corporate and political power, and displace local knowledge with data. By framing the discussion of computers in terms of these world-wide trends we can avoid the simplistic thinking that surrounds the usual discussions about educating for the Information Age. |
