Consumer safety cooperation in the global market - some reflections on future work

Titel: Consumer safety cooperation in the global market - some reflections on future work
Auteur: Ringstedt, Nils
Verschenen in: International journal on injury control and safety promotion
Paginering: Jaargang 5 (1998) nr. 3 pagina's 155-170
Jaar: 1998-09-01
Inhoud: Consumer safety continues to be an important consumer policy issue with an increasingly international dimension. It has been an essential part of the activities of various international bodies, especially the OECD Committee on Consumer Policy. In 1972 the Committee set up a Working Party on Consumer Safety to promote a harmonized policy approach in all Member countries. The present article gives a brief inventory of, among other things, OECD consumer safety activities since the start of this work and discusses it in connection with the work of other institutions. Moreover, the author argues in favor of future consumer safety cooperation in the global market, referring in particular to notifications, information exchange on safety policy, injury reporting and data collection, new legislation and organization, risk assessment and enforcement practices, market surveillance, market control - systems and methods and safety research. In a global market there is an increasing need for systematic work on consumer safety in existing networks. It will be up to existing institutions active in the safety field to ensure and further develop patterns for international cooperation which match the rapid development of the global market for consumers.
