Preventing accidents to elderly people: a strategy for managing risks

Title: Preventing accidents to elderly people: a strategy for managing risks
Author: Tinker, Anthea
Appeared in: International journal on injury control and safety promotion
Paging: Volume 5 (1998) nr. 1 pages 13-22
Year: 1998-03-01
Contents: The aim of this paper was to draw together four pieces of research to see what lessons they have for risk strategies which might help prevent accidents to elderly people. The role of education and training programmes is particularly addressed. It is concluded that any strategy must include a multi-disciplinary approach and must involve elderly people themselves, professionals, families and the general public. Very few studies appear to take into account issues having to do with education and training, although this was perceived as one strategy. The danger of generalising about elderly people is pointed out and examples are given where different strategies may have to be adopted, for example for people with dementia.
