Uranium tailings disposal: review of current technology

Titel: Uranium tailings disposal: review of current technology
Auteur: Al-Hashimi, Ahmad
Verschenen in: International journal of environmental studies
Paginering: Jaargang 42 (1992) nr. 1 pagina's 53-62
Jaar: 1992-09
Inhoud: The words disposal and “long-term” storage are presently used interchangeably. This becomes inevitable, especially in cases where hundreds of millions of tonnes of solid wastes are involved. Land reclamation is prohibitively expensive when poorly-designed, abandoned disposal yards are dealt with. Dispersion of contaminants to ground or surface waters has been another environmental concern which attracted due attention. Because of the radioactive and perserverant nature of some pollutants, pollution-control technology becomes very complicated and costly. For instance, the cost of disposing one tonne of uranium tailings has risen from $0.15 in the 1950's to $5.00 in the 1980's. Thus, the successful technology is the one which is economically viable and does not place any burden on the future generations. The integrity of the structural and lining materials used to confine the solid wastes should not be questionable, given the expected very long service time. To devise a proper waste management policy, taking into account the factors affecting uranium tailings disposal, one needs to understand the roots of this environmental concern. The principal object of this study was to unravel the intrigues of this subject.
