In Great Britain some areas have been selected for experimental work on the fluoridation of water and prevention of dental caries in infant and young children. Most potable supplies are nowadays polluted with sewage and during sterilisation halomethanes may be formed, which substances are reputed carcinogens. An investigation was carried out into the occurrence of halomethanes in fluoridated and chlorinated-fluoridated waters with negative results. The benefits of use of granular activated carbon to remove halomethanes, should they ever be detected, is mentioned. |
