Removal of trace heavy metals by solid-liquid separation

Titel: Removal of trace heavy metals by solid-liquid separation
Auteur: Wasay, S. A.
Puri, B. K.
Verschenen in: International journal of environmental studies
Paginering: Jaargang 44 (1993) nr. 2-3 pagina's 181-188
Jaar: 1993-11
Inhoud: Highly sensitive and economical methods have been developed for the removal of trace heavy metal ions such as Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Ru(III), Rh(III), Pd(II), Os(VIII), Ir(III) and Pt(IV), present in a large aqueous volume by absorption of their Phenanthrenequinone Monoximes (PQM) chelates on microcrystalline naphthalene in different pH ranges in a fluidized bed reactor. The above metal-PQM chelates were also removed into molten naphthalene in the same pH ranges in an another reactor. The percentage removal of individual metals in both the methods was similar and found to be more than 99%, whereas that of trace metals from the mixed synthetic as well as wastewater samples was found to be between 95 to 99% due to interference by other metals in both the methods. These methods are applicable for those metal which forms water insoluble complexes with the reagent. Both the methods are very efficient for the preconcentration of these metals from a large volume of the aqueous phase and can be used for the removal and recovery of heavy metals from synthetic, wastewater and effluent of electroplating industries and other industries containing heavy metals in their effluents which could be recycled in the process after de-loading of metals from naphthalene.
