A procedure for designing a stable broadband amplifier employing a potentially unstable transistor is presented. A lower bound for Stern's stability factor is used as a guide for the derivation of a positive real load admittance function. The input coupler is then designed to compensate for the power gain roll-off caused by the decrease of the transistor forward transmission coefficient, so that the amplifier transducer power gain is flat in the passband and, simultaneously, the stability of the amplifier is guaranteed. An example is given to demonstrate the validity and convenience of this procedure. |
